The Nursery, which has the largest collection of cacti, in the whole of Asia, holds a place of pride for the citizens, Christened the PineView Nursery, it has over 1,500 different varieties of cactuses.

Mr. Mohan S. Pradhan, a good host and a proud owner, narrates:" I do not run my nursery on a commercial basis, rather the whole chain of drawn collection, was the choice of visitors, since orchids were, and still are more of an established feature in Kalimpong."

Mr. Pradhan started this nursery in the early seventies, when, cactus was a very rare feature in the town, but only a glimpse of his cacti paradise, would let one assume that one is in some cacti acclimatised resorts, e.g. South America, or South Africa.

Visiting the, thick polythene, covered "hot houses", the varieties, that are in there are mind-boggling, that too with astonishing names. Nicknamed the "Old Man of Brazil" its titled Orecerus. There are others like the 40 year old, "Old man of Peru (Espostoa)", Chin Cactus Gymnocalciums, Matukana, Neoporteria, Parodia. But a beautiful one lies in the corner. Famously known as the "Blue Cactus", its Pilosocereus, and is found in Argentina.

Pointing to his varieties, Mr Pradhan said, "In the initial stages, i imported them from various corners of the world. Cacti was arare feature in the 70s and the tourists, often asked about it. Now with such a wide variety at display, they don't have to visit abroad to take a glimpse of their favorite species," said Mr Pradhan, who is also a recipient of ten recognized awards.
